Make the Most of the Coast Meetup

Saturday 11 January
Eastney - 10pm - 2 Hours
Portsmouth Photography Group

A beach location is perfect for photography due to its raw, natural beauty and the variety of textures available. Elements like fishing boats, rusty chains, and debris add character and tell a story of time and nature's effects. These subjects, often weathered by saltwater and wind, offer incredible texture and contrast that can be accentuated through black and white photography. The rust on chains or the peeling paint on boats brings out rugged details, perfect for monochrome imagery, where shadows and highlights become more pronounced. Beach photography also allows for creative compositions, from close-up shots of decaying materials to expansive landscapes with a moody, atmospheric feel.

Great tuition. Taruun explained things really clearly, then talked us through practical examples. I now have a much better understanding of leading lines, (especially where to place the camera), and filling the frame. My biggest takeaway was using low angles to create interesting images - something I'll definitely be using. I really enjoyed the morning and also Taruun's thorough but relaxed teaching style.

This was an excellent event, Taruun was incredibly knowledgable and also very talented as a photographer. He has a great instructional and delivery manner, a naturally engaging teacher, and we were blessed to have someone so enthusiastic to share this knowledge. We were taught some excellent tips and techniques, I do already have some photography experience and I took away a good few pearls of wisdom. Very worthwhile, good atmosphere, first class in my opinion!

My second ever visit to hopefully see kingfishers. None had landed but 2 had just flown by, camera was ready hoping they would land, when the gulls started a commotion overhead. The osprey dived, missed, went back up and came in for a second dive. Camera was ready. The fish was caught and off he went. Very fortunate to see this, first ever sighting of an osprey, and succeeded in getting some ?keepers? as he flew off to enjoy tea.

This was my second visit the Island. Unfortunately my 2023 trip was too late to see the Puffins as they all leave late July to early August. This years trip was Mid July when the adults were busy bringing food to their young. This image was shot of one of the adult birds arriving back at its landing site unfortunately without food for its young. What I especially like about the image is it differs from most as it shows the Puffin in full stretch showing off its tail feathers and outstretched web

The photo was taken at night. At low shutter speed on my grandad's old Nikon fa.I also had a ND filter on the camera so light was difficult to come in to the lens. If I remember correctly it was taken at 5.6 aperture and on a 4 second timer. I haven't done many photos at low shutter speed, but I didn't know what I would be getting until I took out the film from the camera. The photo is unedited, because I like to keep it original and editing it just takes the fun out of film photography.
